Laser Tooth Whitening
Laser Tooth Whitening is a procedure that is becoming more popular as people are taking better care of their teeth and would like to present their smile as beautifully as possible.
Laser Tooth Whitening - How does it work?
The laser light activates a whitening solution on the surface of the teeth to break down the staining molecules and remove discolourations. At Adelaide Cosmetic Dentistry, this procedure is done using a real laser and one tooth at a time to minimise heating up the teeth and sensitivity.
The teeth are carefully cleaned and the gums are isolated for protection. The patented red hydrogen peroxide gel is applied to the teeth and is activated using a green laser light. The interaction between the gel and the laser breaks the staining molecules and leaves the teeth looking whiter. The formulation is non-acidic and no UV light is used.
Laser Tooth Whitening - Is it safe?
Laser tooth whitening or laser tooth bleaching is a safe and effective procedure and is the first line of treatment when it comes to severe tooth discolouration. Tooth whitening is a lot more conservative and cost-effective compared to other forms of cosmetic treatment such as veneers.
This procedure is done comfortably while you watch a DVD of your choice. Sensitivity can happen in a small number of cases. The patients are encouraged to report this immediately so the dentist can divert the laser beam to another tooth and then gently come back.
How well does it work?
Laser tooth whitening can effectively treat yellow teeth or discoloured teeth.Tooth whitening results are visible and immediate using the laser and are often enough to satisfy patients' aesthetic needs. Please note if tooth discolouration is severe, such as in cases of fluorosis or antibiotic staining, tooth whitening alone may not be enough and veneering the teeth may be indicated. Modern veneering systems do not always require extensive reduction of teeth and are very minimally invasive. Please visit our dental veneer page for more information.
One must bear in mind that tooth whitening is often not a permanent procedure and the teeth may discolour again due to our lifestyle factors and diet. Teeth whitening costs may vary depending on the type of procedure. In-office whitening is a popular method but not all lights used are lasers. A UV tooth whitening device may cause skin burns or heat up the teeth. At Adelaide Cosmetic Dentistry, Laser tooth whitening uses an actual laser, it is only performed by a qualified dentist and is never delegated to nursing staff or hygienists.
