Laser Tooth Whitening

Laser Tooth Whitening is a procedure that is becoming more popular as people are taking better care of their teeth and would like to present their smile as beautifully as possible.

Laser Tooth Whitening - How does it work?

The laser light activates a whitening solution on the surface of the teeth to break down the staining molecules and remove discolourations. At Adelaide Cosmetic Dentistry, this procedure is done using a real laser and one tooth at a time to minimise heating up the teeth and sensitivity.

The teeth are carefully cleaned and the gums are isolated for protection. The patented red hydrogen peroxide gel is applied to the teeth and is activated using a green laser light. The interaction between the gel and the laser breaks the staining molecules and leaves the teeth looking whiter. The formulation is non-acidic and no UV light is used.

Laser Tooth Whitening - Is it safe?

Laser tooth whitening or laser tooth bleaching is a safe and effective procedure and is the first line of treatment when it comes to severe tooth discolouration. Tooth whitening is a lot more conservative and cost-effective compared to other forms of cosmetic treatment such as veneers.

This procedure is done comfortably while you watch a DVD of your choice. Sensitivity can happen in a small number of cases. The patients are encouraged to report this immediately so the dentist can divert the laser beam to another tooth and then gently come back.

How well does it work?

Laser tooth whitening can effectively treat yellow teeth or discoloured teeth.Tooth whitening results are visible and immediate using the laser and are often enough to satisfy patients' aesthetic needs. Please note if tooth discolouration is severe, such as in cases of fluorosis or antibiotic staining, tooth whitening alone may not be enough and veneering the teeth may be indicated. Modern veneering systems do not always require extensive reduction of teeth and are very minimally invasive. Please visit our dental veneer page for more information.

One must bear in mind that tooth whitening is often not a permanent procedure and the teeth may discolour again due to our lifestyle factors and diet. Teeth whitening costs may vary depending on the type of procedure. In-office whitening is a popular method but not all lights used are lasers. A UV tooth whitening device may cause skin burns or heat up the teeth. At Adelaide Cosmetic Dentistry, Laser tooth whitening uses an actual laser, it is only performed by a qualified dentist and is never delegated to nursing staff or hygienists.

We are always more than happy to talk to you about tooth whitening and other dental procedures so send us an email or give us a call on 82131821.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is the whitening permanent?

A: No tooth whitening treatment is permanent. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee how long the whitening will last as it depends on diet and lifestyle. If you are a smoker, coffee drinker or a red wine drinker, the results will not last as long as if you weren't. The basic rule to apply when doing any tooth whitening is: Anything that will stain a white shirt will stain your teeth.

Q: How effective is laser teeth whitening?

A: We estimate the result to be at least two shades whiter than what you have. As everyone is different, so are their teeth. We can never predict exactly how your teeth are going to respond. Some people go beyond the two shades whiter than predicted.

Q: Will my teeth go paper white?

A: Teeth do not go paper white. The result is determined by your starting shade and by each person's teeth and how they respond to the whitening.

Q: Is it painful? Will I experience sensitivity?

A: Sensitivity can occur in a small number of cases, especially if the teeth have been sensitive prior to treatment. It is due to the action of peroxide and in almost all cases it goes away within 24 hours.

Q: Is it safe? Does it damage the teeth?

A: Smartbleach laser tooth whitening has been researched extensively and like most bleaching methods, causes no damage to the teeth. It simply breaks the large staining molecules into smaller ones and, as a result, the surface of the tooth reflects the light more effectively, making the tooth appear lighter in colour.

Unlike other in-office bleaching methods, the laser beam is in contact with each tooth for only 30 seconds at a time. This way, the risk of heat damage to the pulp is minimised. The bleaching substance is not ingested.

Q: How long does it take?

A: The overall procedure takes approximately 1-hour to complete. It is a one-off treatment that doesn't require any at home maintenance and can be done in a lunch break.

Q: Can I claim teeth whitening back on private health insurance?

A: The majority of health funds do not pay back with any teeth whitening. This is because it is considered an optional procedure. At a consultation appointment, we can provide you with the item numbers that you require checking with your private health insurance.

Q: What can I eat or drink afterwards?

A: In the first 48 hours after treatment you should avoid eating or drinking anything that can permanently stain a white shirt; this includes coloured fizzy drinks, black tea or coffee, and red wine.

Q: I have a lot of fillings and crowns. Can they be bleached?

A: No, bleaching only works on natural tooth substance. Any fillings or crowns may appear too dark after the rest of the tooth has been bleached and may require replacement.
